Biography                   

American countertenor Randall Scotting is impressing and charming audiences with a blend of commanding stage presence, rich voice, and innate musicality.

In the 2010 season Mr. Scotting will appear in Budapest singing the title role in Handel’s Orlando with the Liszt Ferenc Orchestra, and he will sing the title role in Handel’s Rinaldo in Mexico for the Teatro Degollado. In 2009 he makes his debut with the Minnesota Opera singing the roles of the Coachman and the Fox in the American Premiere of Jonathan Dove’s opera The Adventures of Pinocchio, and he will make his German debut at the Landestheater Neustrelitz in a series of Opera Gala concerts. After singing recitals in several venues in Hungary, he will return to Germany to sing the role of Ottone in Handel’s Agrippina for the Landestheater Neustrelitz.

In 2008 Mr. Scotting was seen twice at Carnegie Hall, first under the baton of Maestro Ton Koopman in works of Handel, and later in an improvised performance piece with Bobby Mcferrin: The Tower of Babel. Also in 2008-09 he sang his first Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, and performed the Contemporary music masterwork Eight Song’s for a Mad King by Peter Maxwell Davies. In addition, he was the featured soloist on a professionally released CD of a new cantata for orchestra, chorus, and countertenor entitled Dive, and he performed in recital as a member of the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival. As a Fulbright Scholar in Budapest, Hungary, Mr. Scotting specialized in study and performance of the region’s Folk and Contemporary music, focusing on the works of Béla Bartók, György Ligeti, and György Kurtág.

In 2007 Mr. Scotting first worked with New York City Opera in the Handel works Flavio and Agrippina. Also in the 2007/2008 season he performed Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Des Moines Metro Opera and sang Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck in Colorado. In concert, Mr. Scotting performed as the vocal soloist in Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire.

During the 2006/2007 season Mr. Scotting made his European stage debut as Teseo in the Festival Dei Due Mondi (Spoleto, Italy) performances of Vivaldi’s Ercole sul Termodonte, conducted by Alan Curtis with il Complesso Barocco. This production was recorded for video (voted best opera DVD of 2007 in Italy) and broadcast live by RAI radio. In addition to his Spoleto Festival debut, he sang in the world premiere of Channah, a gospel oratorio by Paul Schoenfeld, conducted by Ann Manson at the Juilliard Theater, and he performed the dying swan in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

In previous seasons, Randall Scotting performed with the Juilliard Opera Center as Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and made his professional stage debut with Opera Colorado in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, starring Stephanie Blythe and Elizabeth Futral. He also performed Athamas in Handel’s Semele and made his South American concert debut as soloist in the Stabat Mater of Pergolesi.

Mr. Scotting is an award winner of the Lucia Albanese Puccini Competition (2008), the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (2006 District winner), the Denver Lyric Opera Guild (2006), and the Dallas Opera Guild (2004).

Randall Scotting is a native of Colorado and received his Performer’s Certificate from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his Bachelor of Music from Butler University (Indiana) with further studies at the Juilliard Opera Center as a guest artist .
